Mè Xửng (Hue Sesame Peanut Candy)
Hue's signature sweet: a soft, chewy sesame and peanut candy made from sugar and malt. The classic edible souvenir to bring home from the city.
Mè xửng is the confection most associated with Hue and the souvenir many visitors carry home. It is made by cooking sugar and malt syrup into a thick, sticky mass with roasted peanuts and sesame seeds, then pressing and cutting it into small squares or thin bars that are individually wrapped. The texture is soft and chewy, with a nutty, toasty flavour from the sesame and a moderate sweetness; some versions are crispier or thinner. It is traditionally enjoyed in small pieces with a cup of green or lotus tea, and it keeps well, which is why it is packaged in boxes for gifting. Long-established Hue producers sell it at Đông Ba Market, in shops around the city and at the airport. For travellers, it is an easy, inexpensive taste of Hue to share with friends, and a good way to end a meal or a tea break. Check the label for the softer or crisper style if you have a preference.
