How to Get to Hue: Flights, Trains and Scenic Routes

Find the best way to reach Hue from overseas or elsewhere in Vietnam. Compare flights to Phu Bai, transfers from Da Nang, scenic trains, buses and private cars, with practical advice for a smooth arrival.

Hue is well connected to the rest of Vietnam, but most international travellers will not arrive on a direct overseas flight. The easiest route usually involves a domestic connection to Hue’s airport or an onward journey from Da Nang.

The right option depends on where you are coming from, how much time you have and whether you want the journey to be purely practical or part of the experience.

The short answer: Connect through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City and fly to Hue for the fastest arrival. Fly into Da Nang and continue by private car for maximum convenience, or take the train for the most scenic journey.

Arriving in Hue from Overseas

Most international visitors reach Hue through one of three gateways:

Hanoi: Enter Vietnam at Noi Bai International Airport and take a domestic flight to Hue.

Ho Chi Minh City: Connect from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Hue by air.

Da Nang: Land at Da Nang International Airport and continue to Hue by car, limousine or train.

Connecting through Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City is usually the quickest route when Hue is your first destination. Da Nang is more flexible for travellers combining Hue with Hoi An, the coast or other parts of Central Vietnam.

When booking separate international and domestic tickets, leave enough time for immigration, baggage collection, customs and terminal changes. A longer connection is safer than depending on a tightly timed transfer.

Flying Directly to Phu Bai Airport

Phu Bai International Airport, airport code HUI, is the closest airport to Hue. The drive into the city usually takes around 30 minutes.

Regular domestic connections commonly operate from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Other routes may change by season, so always check the live schedule before planning your itinerary.

On arrival, the simplest transfer options are:

A prepaid or metered airport taxi.

An app-based car service, when available.

A private transfer arranged by your hotel.

An airport shuttle if its drop-off point is convenient.

A private transfer is useful for late arrivals, families and travellers carrying large luggage. Confirm whether the quoted price covers the entire vehicle and provide your flight number so the driver can monitor delays.

Getting to Hue from Da Nang Airport

Da Nang International Airport, code DAD, has a wider range of international connections and is one of the most practical gateways to Hue.

Private Car: The Most Convenient Option

A private car normally takes around two to two and a half hours. It provides direct airport pickup, space for luggage and delivery to your accommodation in Hue.

This route can be more than a simple transfer. Ask whether the driver will travel through the Hai Van Pass or use the road tunnel. The pass offers coastal and mountain views, while the tunnel is usually faster.

If time allows, arrange short stops overlooking Lang Co Lagoon or the coastline. Confirm these stops in advance, as a standard airport transfer may follow the quickest route without stopping.

Limousine or Shuttle: Best for Solo Travellers

Shared limousine vans are usually more affordable than a private car while remaining relatively comfortable.

Before booking, check whether the service:

Collects passengers directly from the airport.

Departs from an office in central Da Nang.

Drops passengers at their Hue hotel or a fixed station.

Accepts large suitcases without an extra charge.

The advertised travel time may not include hotel pickups, waiting time or intermediate stops.

Train: The Most Scenic Arrival

The railway journey from Da Nang to Hue crosses the Hai Van Pass between forested mountains and the sea. It is one of the most memorable short train journeys in Vietnam.

Regular services and the dedicated Central Heritage Connection tourist train operate on this route. The journey generally takes around three hours, depending on the service.

This option works best when the train schedule aligns comfortably with your flight. Remember to include the transfer from Da Nang Airport to Da Nang Railway Station.

Getting to Hue from Hoi An

Hoi An does not have an airport or railway station. Travellers must go directly by road or connect through Da Nang.

The most practical choices are:

Private car: Best for convenience, luggage and scenic stops.

Shared limousine: Suitable for solo travellers and smaller budgets.

Train via Da Nang: Best for travellers who value scenery over speed.

Guided motorbike transfer: An adventurous option when luggage transport is included.

Travelling by train requires a separate journey from Hoi An to Da Nang Railway Station. For most first-time visitors, a direct car or limousine is easier.

Travelling to Hue by Train

Hue Railway Station sits on Vietnam’s main north–south railway, making the city a natural stop on a longer journey through the country.

Direct trains connect Hue with destinations including Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Dong Hoi, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City.

For short journeys such as Da Nang to Hue, a soft seat is usually sufficient. For overnight travel from Hanoi, Ninh Binh or southern Vietnam, a sleeper berth offers significantly more comfort.

Choosing a Sleeper Berth

Four-berth soft sleeper: More space, privacy and comfort.

Six-berth sleeper: More affordable but less spacious.

Lower berth: Easier to access and convenient for larger luggage.

Upper berth: Usually quieter but requires climbing.

Book using the same name and identification number shown on your passport. During national holidays and peak travel periods, sleeper berths can sell out well in advance.

Hue Railway Station is close to the central area. From the station, continue by taxi, app-based car or a transfer arranged by your accommodation.

Getting to Hue from Phong Nha or Dong Hoi

Travellers moving south from Phong Nha commonly continue to Hue by limousine, bus or train.

A direct limousine from Phong Nha is usually the simplest choice because it avoids returning to Dong Hoi. The train is a comfortable alternative, but passengers staying in Phong Nha must first travel to Dong Hoi Railway Station.

Check the final drop-off point before booking a road transfer. Some services stop in central Hue, while others provide hotel delivery.

Travelling by Sleeper Bus

Sleeper buses and open-tour buses connect Hue with many destinations across Vietnam. They are often the cheapest option and overnight services can reduce accommodation costs.

However, comfort and service quality vary considerably. Sleeper buses may not suit tall travellers, families with young children, light sleepers or anyone uncomfortable with long overnight road journeys.

Before purchasing a ticket, confirm:

The exact departure and arrival locations.

Whether hotel pickup is included.

The operator’s recent reviews.

Luggage limits and additional fees.

Whether the bus arrives very early in the morning.

Avoid choosing an operator based only on the lowest advertised price.

Riding to Hue over the Hai Van Pass

The journey from Da Nang or Hoi An to Hue by motorbike offers sweeping views of mountains, lagoons and coastline. It can be an exceptional experience for properly licensed and confident riders.

Foreign visitors should only ride independently when their driving licence, motorcycle entitlement, International Driving Permit and travel insurance are valid for Vietnam.

If you do not meet those requirements, consider travelling as a passenger with an experienced local rider. Reputable guided transfers can carry your main luggage separately and allow you to enjoy the route without driving.

Avoid the pass during heavy rain, poor visibility or severe weather. The road contains steep gradients and sharp bends, and conditions can change quickly.

Arriving by Cruise Ship

International cruise passengers may arrive at Chan May Port, south of Hue. The transfer into the city generally takes around one and a half hours, depending on traffic and port procedures.

Cruise visitors should arrange transport in advance and allow a generous return margin before the ship’s departure. Confirm that the driver has permission to collect passengers inside the port or identify the designated meeting point.

Which Option Should You Choose?

Fastest overall: A domestic flight to Phu Bai Airport.

Easiest from an international airport: Private car from Da Nang.

Most scenic: Train from Da Nang across the Hai Van Pass.

Best from Hoi An: Direct car or shared limousine.

Best for an overnight journey: Four-berth soft sleeper train.

Best for a limited budget: Shared limousine or reputable sleeper bus.

Best for adventure: A licensed ride or guided motorbike transfer over the Hai Van Pass.

Before You Book

Use your passport name when purchasing flights and train tickets.

Check schedules again shortly before travelling.

Allow extra transfer time during the rainy season.

Confirm pickup and drop-off addresses in writing.

Ask whether luggage and scenic stops are included.

Keep your hotel address available in both English and Vietnamese.

Avoid very tight connections between separately booked tickets.

Our recommendation: Fly to Phu Bai when time matters. Arrive through Da Nang when you want the journey itself—across mountains, lagoon and coastline—to become your first experience of Hue.
